Directions from Main Road Wynberg
Wetton Road runs at right angles to the Main Road away from the mountain out towards the Cape Flats. It is where Kenilworth turns into Wynberg- Maynard Mall is on the corner of Main and Wetton Roads.
Go down Wetton Road (with the Main Road behind you). You come very quickly to a bridge crossing the railway line. Go over this and down the hill and straight through the traffic lights. You now have the racecourse on your left. Keep going…. You eventually come to a circle. Cross the circle (you take the second exit from the circle) and you will now be in Lansdowne Road. Go through the first set of lights (don’t jump them or speed because there is a camera there) but turn right at the second set (into Springfield Street)- having turned right you will have the Lutheran Church on your left (it is on the corner of Lansdowne Road and the road you are turning into). Having turned right keep going until you reach a T-junction (It is quite a long way). At this T-junction turn right (You have now turned into Ottery Road, although there is no signpost to tell you this). Proceed along this road and take the next left. You are now in Varkensvlei Road. Go along Varkensvlei Road until you reach a 4-way stop. Cross over and proceed. After about 1 km you will see a gravel road to your left marked Cheval Vapeur and also Over the Stable. There is also a much bigger sign for Coirtex. Turn down this road and about half way down on your left you will see a sign Cheval Vapeur- you will need to hoot at the gate if it is not already open.
Directions from Paarl/Somerset West to Cheval Vapeur
Go down the N1 (if coming from Paarl) or the N2 (if coming from Somerset West) and take the R300 in the direction of Muizenberg. Go along the R300 until the very end- it ends in a T-junction at a set of robots. Turn right at these robots. Go through the next set of robots.(The road is wide here, but the speed limit is 60 and they trap- so be careful!). On your left you will see a brick wall with an electric fence on top- this is Snaith Racing. You will peel off left (this is the first opportunity you have to go left and it is marked M10 Weltevreden Road)). You will still have Snaith on your left. Having peeled off left you come to a set of robots. Turn left. You will still have Snaith on your left, you will have Cape Brick on your right and shortly after Cape Brick you will see Gold Circle racing stables also on your right.
Continue along this road and take the first right- this is Varkensvlei Road. It is at a 3-way stop. Go down Varkensvlei and you will see some dirt roads going off to your right. You want the one that is marked Cheval Vapeur- it comes just after a sign on your left saying ‘Western Cape Seedlings’. It is also marked Coirtex (with a much bigger sign) Go about half way down this road and you will see a sign to Cheval Vapeur on your left- you must go through the gate. If it is closed you can hoot or phone me (082 901 8295)
Directions from Town
You want to get onto the M5 heading toward Muizenberg. Eventually you will see a sign for Racecourse Road – you don’t want this exit but the next one (which is quite a way further) At the next exit you turn left down Ottery Road with the mountain and Wynberg behind you. Keep on this road and eventually you come to a large set of robots and a T-junction (this is just after the Fire Station on your left). Well, it is not really a T because the road does go straight over but it turns to gravel – so it is a T-junction in tar. Turn right and take the first left (also at robots). You go past a cemetery on your left, then the road turns sharply left after which you take the first right (a couple of hundred meters).
You are now in Varkensvlei Road. Keep going. At the 4-way stop cross over (i.e. stay in Varkensvlei). Approximately 1 km from the 4-way stop you will see a gravel road to your left – it is marked Cheval Vapeur, also Over the Stable and the biggest sign says Coirtex. Go down this gravel road for about 600m and you will see another sign on your left for Cheval Vapeur – go through the gate – if it is closed hoot or phone me (082 901 8295).
